Filling The Father Vacuum

Filling The Father Vacuum

Many American males get older without growing up. Today we’re more likely to meet a boy who shaves than a man with healthy individual and group identity. The lack of fathers draws boys into violent gangs who offer a parody of true fatherhood. While the gang’s solution is false, the need for male affirmation and direction is real. Cracking down on crime doesn’t help as much as affirming healthy masculinity for the good of everyone. Male needs are real and necessary to address or society will descend into chaos.

Forty years ago, a parent’s greatest fear for their son was probably coming home to catch him impregnating his girlfriend. Today, parents increasingly come home to sons who never left and don’t even try to date. Boys lack mature men attempting great things in real life. The educational establishment considers testosterone a disease to be “cured” with ADHD drugs. Manly desire for competition’s few outlets left are video games or sports infected by gender madness and participation trophies. A sex drive that used to encourage self-improvement to compete for a chance to impress the opposite sex is now short-circuited with porn. And social media will swoop in to affirm and justify any and all life choices, even the most destructive. Instead of turning into mature role models themselves they get just enough support at home to drown in pleasure, living off of parents who fail to call out maturity in their own kids.

Adult men need to see the great war we are losing today. It isn’t to a foreign army but the millions of boys and young men that never met a man’s man to take an interest in their life. They need men to fill voids left by divorce, neglect and institutional corruption. The modern welfare state financially rewards single women to have children out of wedlock. Our tax dollars fund the destruction of families by rewarding single parent households.

On a national level, we need brave men speaking truth and repealing failed policies until we put LBJ’s new deal and most other public welfare in the ash heap of history. On a personal level, we must take a hard look at ourselves and become better role models. It’s not enough to warn young men of danger if it is “do as I say, not as I do” because boys will eventually figure out the hypocrisy.

To get fathers, we first need mentors modeling masculinity. Women are part of the equation, but the key to maturing boys is men demonstrating what fatherhood means. Even if a biological father isn’t present or mature there are others. Coaches, teachers, uncles and others can command respect of a young man can guide him to finding and unleashing his potential. They can also steer him toward worthy pursuits and the value of keeping one’s word in marriage, business and society at large.

When men make and keep lifelong marriage commitments, women receive the commitment and support they need to live secure, happy lives. When a culture has stable homes, the children they bring into the world together have positive models of conflict resolution, delayed gratification and stable identities allowing them to find their unique talents for the betterment of all.

  • The Future is Fathering

Fatherlessness is the crisis that will destroy our nation or be the great challenge we conquer. Previous American generations fought slavery and world wars but our battle is to restore men as the key building block of families. If our nation still exists in 100 years, our great-grandchildren won’t trace cultural progress to scientific discoveries,…

Putting bread on the table has been a primary job description for fathers since the beginning. Improving our food supply involves…
